- Where do I get my tags for my car? At the Tax Commissioner's Office located at the Hart County Courthouse, which is in downtown Hartwell on the Courthouse square. - Where can I find a doctor or a hospital? Hart County Hospital is located at 138 Gibson Street . Based on the 2002 CENSUS, Hart County has 74 Hospital Beds, 6 Dentists, 17 Medical Doctors, 2 Nursing Homes (209 beds), 23 EMT's, 4 Ambulances and 1 Quick Response Vehicle (QRV), 1 Mental Health/Substance Abuse Center, & 1 Personal Care Home.

- What information can you provide about the Dam and Lake Hartwell ? Lake Hartwell has 962 miles of shoreline and covers nearly 56,000 acres of surface water. One of the largest man made lakes in the south, and is one of the three most visited Corps of Engineer lakes in the country. Lake Hartwell offers fishing, camping, sailing and other recreational activities.

- Can I go fishing on Lake Hartwell ? Fishermen will tell you there's nothing like this lake's thousands of small coves in late afternoon for pulling in largemouth bass. Lake Hartwell keeps both amateurs and pros coming back every year for some of the most outstanding fishing in the Southeast. You will need a fishing license if you are over 16 years of age. The cost for a fishing license is $9 for a Hart County resident and $24 for a non-resident.

 

- Where can I go to play golf? Hartwell has two public golf courses.

- What industry employs the greatest number of people? We have many manufacturing facilities in Hart County . Tourism is a growing industry with Lake Hartwell nearby. With the new 150-acre Gateway Industrial Park off Highway 85, we hope to be adding many hi-tech jobs for our community.

 

- What historical information or museums are there about Hart County ? The Teasley-Holland House in Hartwell is a historic museum in a one-story Victorian style home that was built in 1880 by Isham Asbury Teasley. This is where the Chamber is located at 31 E. Howell Street . The Hartwell region abounds in historical lore, much of it inherited from the Cherokee Indians who once roamed here and from the early settlers who pioneered the area. "Ah-Yeh-Li A-Lo-Hee" or the Cherokee "Center of the World" is located off of U.S. Highway 29 in Hart County . The Cherokees would assemble here to hold their councils, dance and worship, barter their hides, furs, and blankets for the trade goods of white men. It is marked by a roadside monument in front of Fabritex on Hwy. 29.

- What are some outstanding attractions in Hart County ? Try a stroll through beautiful downtown Hartwell on the Courthouse Square and historic Depot Street in Hartwell. The Hart County Community Theatre, located at 83 Depot St. has some wonderful productions, for schedule call (706) 376-5599. -What are the annual events? There is always something happening in Hart County – here are just a few events to look forward to. In April, there is the Antique Boat Show. In May, there is the Lake Hartwell Dam Run. In June, the Pre 4 th Extravaganza with the Dancin' on Depot Street Dance, followed by the Hartwell Service League's Arts & Crafts Extravaganza and Parade and Fireworks, followed by the ARTS in hARTwell festival in September.

- How did Hart County get its name? The county was named for Nancy Hart, an early settler and a Revolutionary heroine who served as a rebel spy and killed five Tories who threatened her home. Hart County is the only county in Georgia named for a woman. Hart County is bordered on the north and east by Lake Hartwell , on the south by Elbert County , and on the west by Madison and Franklin Counties . On the east is South Carolina with the counties of Anderson and Oconee bordering Hart's boundary line.
