Hart County History

Hart County, created in 1853 from parts of Elbert and Franklin counties, is named for Revolutionary War heroine, Nancy Morgan Hart. It has an interesting and unique history back to prehistoric times. The Cherokee met to trade with tribes to the south at “Center of the World”. Several Revolutionary War veterans settled here and their gravesites are memorialized with markers. Likewise veterans of every war since called Hart County home. The Hartwell Historic District boasts both commercial and residential buildings of historic and architectural interest, including the Teasley-Holland House, home to the Hart County Chamber of Commerce and the Hart County Historical Society Museum.

We take pride in our past and have set the pace for the future by revitalizing downtown and the historic district, combining good, old-fashioned family fun with interesting festivals, tours, shopping, world class dining and accommodations. More history on Hart County

Hartwell

One-hundred acres of land was purchased in May of 1854 by the Judges of the Inferior Court and was laid off into streets, squares, and lots. This land became the City of Hartwell, the county seat of Hart County, named for the Revolutionary War heroine, Nancy Hart.  The city was officially incorporated by the legislature on February 26th, 1856. Bowersville

Bowersville incorporated on Sept. 4, 1883. Bowersville has one of the highest altitudes in Hart County at 934'. A fire in 1888 destroyed many Bowersville businesses.

Bowersville Town Council are seeking memorabilia in the form of photographs, documents and relics of Bowersville from its creation through wars and glory days, as well as through the accomplishments and foibles of its citizens.

As a player in the railroad/cotton boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Bowersville's history reflects much of the South's history. Through the Great Depression and up to and after World War II, the town's history reflects much of the country's history, as well. Those willing to donate or to allow their items to be copied should call the Bowersville Town Hall at 706-245-8971. More on the city of Bowersville
