Hartwell Elementary School Students Went West
Hartwell Elementary School students went west on Thursday, Feb. 21, as the fourth grade class learned all about Western Expansion as part of the Georgia History Curriculum standard for their grade level. Teaming with community volunteers in period-piece clothes, students mined for gold, learned square dance moves, played traditional pioneer games, sang campfire songs and reenacted the Battle of the Alamo. Not to be left out, they, too, learned how to make butter, a tricky but tasty task even modern chefs may take for granted.
Leading the western-bound classroom adventure was Sam Brown, a local historian and Hart County graduate, who brought with him a team of likeminded volunteers, ready to assist in making learning a hands-on, fun day of new memories with the added bonus of academics.
