An Open Letter to Donna Madkiff: Thank You for 21 Years of Love for Hart County's Animals

Dear Donna,

There are people in every community who show up quietly, consistently, and without fanfare, doing the kind of work that changes lives. In Hart County, you have been that person for animals who could not speak for themselves and for the families who love them.

For 21 years, you dedicated yourself to the Hart County Humane Society with a level of commitment that most of us can only admire from a distance. You helped rescue over 7000 dogs and cats. You connected thousands of families with spay and neuter assistance they could afford. You built partnerships, showed up for animals at the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter, and kept showing up, year after year, because the mission mattered more than the recognition.

That kind of work leaves a mark on a place. Hart County's animals are safer, healthier, and more loved because of what you built.

We know this decision was not easy. Stepping away from something that has been, in your own words, a meaningful part of your daily life and a passion that brought you purpose, is a loss in the truest sense. We respect the courage it takes to put your health first, and we hope this season of rest brings you the same care and gentleness you spent two decades extending to others.

To everyone who has ever adopted a pet, spayed or neutered an animal with Donna's help, or simply benefited from a community that takes animal welfare seriously: this is part of her legacy. It lives in every family that has a healthy pet because the cost was manageable. It lives in every animal that found a home because someone kept the lights on and the doors open.

Donna, you built something that will outlast any single chapter. The relationships, the infrastructure, the culture of compassion you helped create in this community, those are not going away. That is your work. That is your gift.
